We could not find a name for either of
these two aircraft in the 379th inventory , but that doesn't
mean there was not a name; we just don't have one listed in
our records. Not all planes had names.

Search No. 1009 Leroy Self,
Jr.
From: David L. McFarland,
dlmcfarland@mindspring.com Lt Col, USAF,
Retired International Association of Eagles To: Looking4@379thbga.org Sent : Fri, 24 Aug 2001 Subject: Leroy Self Jr.
It was very nice to
talk to you today in reference to the search for information
about Leroy Self, Jr. As I said, he was a bombadier on a B-17E
(The Royal Flush, serial number 0-732674) lost over the North
Sea on 14 June 1943. The aircraft went down near Juist Island
off the coast of the Netherlands. Self was a member of the
527th Bomb Squadron, 379th Bomb Group.
It was very
encouraging to hear that Maj Gen Lewis Lyle of Hot Springs has
a very active 379th Reunion Group going. I am sure among their
membership will be some men who know more about Self and about
the mission and his crew. It is my understanding that the
pilot of "The Royal Flush," William H. Pinson, Jr., survived
the crash into the sea and became a POW. Hopefully, he is
alive and well. He would be the best possible person to give
us more information on the events of 14 June 1943.
Major General Bowen
Ballard, the Air Force Reserve Advisor to the Air University
Commandant (Lt Gen LaMontagne) asked my ideas on this search
and I knew that your organization was a good place to start.
General Ballard has taken on this search to help Winton
Blount, former Postmaster General under President Eisenhower.
Mr. Blount has been a major benefactor for the city of
Montgomery and presented the city with The Shakespeare
Festival and the Montgomery Fine Arts Museum. Both are "world
class organizations." I believe that Leroy Self is a relative
of Mr. Blounts wife.
Thanks for your enthusiasm,
Lt. Col McFarland- Six crews went down
on mission # 2 to Wilhelmshaven, Germany (U Boat Pens) of
those six crews I show the names of two 379th BG Associations
Members who were also POW's they might know more information.
They may or may not have been in the same camp, but might know
about what happened to the aircraft or Lt. Pinson and his
crew. Usually officers and enlisted personnel were in separate
POW camps, however since this was early in the war they may
have been confined in the same camp. The Royal Flush was not
an aircraft in the 379th inventory, however there were five
aircraft named Royal Flush (91st, 100th, 390th, 447th and
458th). Maybe more, information can be attained about Lt
Pinson through POW records.
The following are the
crews: The letters and numbers after the location represent
the cemetery plot location (Ardennes A 30 16).

To Whom May
Help!!!
I am looking for any information on my Dad. His
name is BENEDICT E. DANKOVIS. I know he was in the 379th,
either the 525th or 526th Bomb Squad. He was a bombardier, and
in the "Movement Orders" paper that I have found, it states
that he was assigned to "crew No. FV-900-CJ-20 and to B-17
airplane number 43-38193, on aircraft project number 92804-R"
But someone had found out that this plane was in the Pacific.
I know for sure he was in Kimbolton. We have lots of pictures
of big, beautiful planes with "K" on their tails. I also have
his own flight record memo book and a more official list of
his bombing runs, beginning Sep. 1944 through Mar 1945. There
are even more papers, but for now general input would help I
guess. I am putting together a booklet for my sons and the
other grandchildren that my Dad has, but never got to hold. I
was interested in things like the name of the plane he flew so
many missions on, why did he receive the Distinguished Flying
Cross?, just what may have happened to him over there! Thank
You so much for your time and any information or guidance you
may provide to me in my search. I know the entire family of
this wonderful man will be grateful. We miss him very much
THANK YOU!! (Benedict E. Dankovis, service#0717039) Carol
Carol, Lt. Benedict E. Dankovis, Bombardier was in
the 379th Bomb Group 525th Squadron and flew missions with the
group from 9/9/44 to 3/30/45. I believe he flew 31 missions
with the 379th Bomb Group from 9/9/44 to 3/30/45. Your
father's first mission was the 379th Bomb Groups 200th mission
to Mannheim, Germany.
The following is a list of the
crew and their positions: Mission 200 to Mannheim, Germany,
9/9/44 aircraft #43-37743.
Foulger, Raymond C. 2nd Lt.
Pilot; Sibley, Richard, C. 2nd Lt. Co-Pilot; Forsman, John S.
2nd Lt. Navigator; Dankovis, Benedict E. 2nd Lt. Bombardier;
Lieberman, James J. Sgt. Radio Operator/Gunner; Hoffman,
Robert, G Sgt. Engineer/ Top Turret Gunner; Iskerwood, Charles
D. Sgt. Ball Turret/Gunner; Maeder, Vernon F. Sgt. Waist
Gunner; Blincoe, George E. Sgt. Tail Gunner
The
Triangle K on the B-17 was the 379th Bomb Group's insignia.
Aircraft #43-38193 was not listed as one of the 379th Bomb
Groups aircraft in inventory. However, Lt. Dankovis flew three
missions on 43-38178 "Seattle Sue". He flew with several
different crews and on several different aircraft. Lt.
Dankovis flew several missions in the Lead Squadron of the
379th Bomb Group, as Bombardier of the lead crew. He was
awarded the DFC on 4/27/45.

Mike, I mailed you a little while ago but did not know if you
got it. It was an enquiry about a B-17 that crashed after a
collision on my home town of Canvey Island England. I was
wondering if anybody in the 379th BG Org any info or pictures
of the aircraft involved. This would be nice as we have a
small display of parts from the crash site as well as pictures
and info on the crew that is on show in a local museum, we
also have a plaque on the local war memorial to remember the
crew that lived and died in the accident. The B-17 serial no
is 42-97942, Pilot: L Burns, 379th BG based at Kimbolton ..I
do not know the squadron but this would be useful. Any info
would be much appreciated. Mike Ball.

From: Jeff Johnson To:
Looking4@379thbga.org Subject: John W. McMahan
I
just visited your web site while looking for information on
the B17. My old drum teacher flew in during the war. His name
was John W. McMahan (may be "McMahon") and he was a T/Sgt
radio operator in the "Triangle-K" group. I was a teenager
when he taught me percussion in Anderson, Indiana. Mr. McMahan
passed away around 1987.
I remember him showing me a
photo of his crew in front of their B-17. The nose art
consisted of a top hat and a pair of white gloves. I thought
he said the name of his ship was "Topper" and that the nose
art was never really finished, at least at the time of the
photo. Mr. McMahan also told me that his ship was a B-17E
converted to a B-17G by sticking a nose gun on and was one of
the only olive drab painted B17s in his squadron.
I
was surprised to see some information on your web site about
"Ol' Gappy" (aka "Topper "). It's been several years, so some
of the details may be fuzzy in my memory, but I'm wondering if
you'd be able to confirm whether or not a John W. McMahan was
a crew member of "Ol' Gappy". I tried to link to your photo
gallery and other sections of your web site, but the buttons
were not working. Any assistance would be much
appreciated. Kind regards, Jeff Johnson,
Lawrenceville, GA
Jeff, T/SGT
John W. Mahan Radio Operator/Gunner was in the 379th Bomb
Group 524th Squadron and flew missions with the group from
approximately 10/21/44 to 1/15/45. Yes, you are correct the
nose art as shown in the 379th Anthology page 215 shows the
top hat and gloves on the nose of the aircraft and Ol' Gappy
was painted on the nose turret (aircraft 42-40003). Ol' Gappy
flew 157 combat missions, which was more missions than any
other aircraft in the 8th Air Force.
John was one of
many crew members that successfully completed their missions
on Ol' Gappy.
