Hi Looking4:

I wonder if the ship was in use to assembly the 379th BG's formation on May 13 and May 29, 1944. Could you just help me with it, please?

Regards,
Mike Mucha
Poland

Michal –
Thank you for your interest in the 379th Bomb Group. We are happy to be able to provide the following information. Association records are incomplete for #41-9100, “Birmingham Blitzkrieg”, due to its listing as a “non-combat” aircraft. However, the aircraft was assigned to the group during the period covered by the May 13 and May 29 1944 missions, so it is likely the aircraft participated as the formation ship for those missions. A photo of the airplane, taken before application of the formation aircraft paint scheme, is attached. The 379th CO, Colonel Preston, is standing on the extreme left.

This response will be posted in the "Looking 4" section of our website, in case any members have any additional information.

Photo ID for crew picture HO44-8469. The man second from the right on the back row is my father Gordon Cowan Montgomery 1Lt, Bombardier. I do have significant Pictures and information on his tour of duty. Dad died November 1999. I WAS SO HAPPY TO FIND THIS WEB SITE!!!

Thank you,

James -
Our condolences on your Father's passing. We will add his name to our Taps roster.

Association records for Gordon C. Montgomery show he flew 30 missions as bombardier with the 524th Squadron from October 5, 1944 to April 20, 1945. Our records show missions 215, 216, 217, 219, 221, 222, 223, 226, 229, 230, 231, 232, 235, 236, 239, 240, 253, 256, 260, 271, 283, 297, 308, 311, 314, 316, 318, 321, 326, and 329. Lt Montgomery may have flown additional missions, but these are the ones we have in our records.

Our records show Lt Montgomery flying with his "regular" for most of his first 15 missions. Following that, it appears he flew a number of his missions with pick-up crews, followed by a period in the Lead and Deputy Lead crew aircraft. Due to your identification of your Father in the photo from the website (copy attached), we were able to match this photo to the crew of Mission 297. Duffy Hornbeck, who was the tail gunner on this mission (the only mission he flew on a/c 44-8469) is in the front row, far left, and has explained that this was a pick-up crew, and he didn't know the officers, but confirmed the identities of the enlisted crewmen in the crew of 44-8469 for Mission 297 to Kassel, Germany. Crew roster was:

White Jr., William A, 1st Lieutenant, Pilot
Robertson, Isaac E, 1st Lieutenant, Co-Pilot
Chapman, Frederick S, Flight Officer, Navigator
Carr, Duane S, 2nd Lieutenant, Navigator-GEE
Christiansen, William J, 2nd Lieutenant, Navigator-PFF

Fraddo, Stephen J, Tech Sergeant, Engineer/Top Turret Gunner
Evans Jr., David B, Staff Sergeant, Waist Gunner
Hornbeck Jr., Duffy C, Corporal, Tail Gunner

Please also see Looking 4 inquiry 1328, and our response, on the website. This response will be posted in the "Looking 4" section of our website, in case any members have any additional information. We would be very interested in copies of any photos you have and are able to share, to provide better responses to future inquiries.

The aircraft was observed in a "wing over wing" out of control condition. Sgt Keenan, the top turret gunner, is listed as having died as a POW. A photo of "Scarlett O'Hara" is attached. A second photo is included which shows the LH side of this aircraft. Information provided by the navigator, Lt. Hand, states that this aircraft was assigned to them at Kimbolton, and saw previous service in North Africa. The pygmy painted on the LH side was left over from the North Africa service.
