His pilot was Paul Corson, in mission #38 they
flew ship 759 (?). I would like to know what
other missions he flew and what planes. His name
was Merton Lary a gunner. I know triangle K,

for your interest in the 379th Bomb Group. We
are happy to be able to provide the following
information. Association records are incomplete
for #41-9100, “Birmingham Blitzkrieg”, due to
its listing as a “non-combat” aircraft. However,
the aircraft was assigned to the group during
the period covered by the May 13 and May 29 1944
missions, so it is likely the aircraft
participated as the formation ship for those
missions. A photo of the airplane, taken before
application of the formation aircraft paint
scheme, is attached. The 379th CO, Colonel
Preston, is standing on the extreme left.

Montgomery show he flew 30 missions as
bombardier with the 524th Squadron from October
5, 1944 to April 20, 1945. Our records show
missions 215, 216, 217, 219, 221, 222, 223, 226,
229, 230, 231, 232, 235, 236, 239, 240, 253,
256, 260, 271, 283, 297, 308, 311, 314, 316,
318, 321, 326, and 329. Lt Montgomery may have
flown additional missions, but these are the

show Lt Montgomery flying with his "regular" for
most of his first 15 missions. Following that,
it appears he flew a number of his missions with
pick-up crews, followed by a period in the Lead
and Deputy Lead crew aircraft. Due to your
identification of your Father in the photo from
the website (copy attached), we were able to
match this photo to the crew of Mission 297.
Duffy Hornbeck, who was the tail gunner on this
mission (the only mission he flew on a/c
44-8469) is in the front row, far left, and has
explained that this was a pick-up crew, and he
didn't know the officers, but confirmed the
identities of the enlisted crewmen in the crew
of 44-8469 for Mission 297 to Kassel, Germany.

in the 379th BS and was in Kimbolton. Any

He is my wife's grandfather and passed away last
January. He is buried at Arlington National
cemetary and we found a diary that he kept

bomb the synthetic oil plants at Gelsenkirchen,
Germany. This aircraft was listed as Missing in
Action following the mission. Crew was as

The aircraft

control condition. Sgt Keenan, the top turret
gunner, is listed as having died as a POW. A
photo of "Scarlett O'Hara" is attached. A second
photo is included which shows the LH side of
this aircraft. Information provided by the
navigator, Lt. Hand, states that this aircraft
was assigned to them at Kimbolton, and saw
previous service in North Africa. The pygmy
painted on the LH side was left over from the
North Africa service.

he flew with the 379th from Sept.1943 until 25th
Feb. 1944 when his plane was shot down over
