I am helping a friend of mine find some information on her grandfather’s service history in the 379th. She doesn’t have any specific information to go by. We found your site in the process of searching and only see one reference to him in search no. 1193. She would like to know general history and what missions he flew. The only notable mission of which she is aware he participated is Schweinfurt on 17 August, 1943. I have attached some pictures she gave me. He is on the front row, right end. She did not have any names of the other crew members. We appreciate any information you can provide.

E. Jason Lamb

Jason –
Thank you for the photos of Lt. Archdeacon and his crew. We appreciate any and all such documentation for our archives.

Association records for John R. Archdeacon show he flew 35 missions as bombardier with the 526th Squadron from April 30 to July 18, 1944. Our records show missions 107, 109, 113, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 123, 124, 127, 129, 130, 133, 134, 136, 137, 138, 140, 143, 144, 145, 146, 148, 150, 154, 155, 156, 158, 159, 160, 162, 166, 167, and 168. Lt. Archdeacon may have flown additional missions, but these are the ones we show in our records.

Lt. Archdeacon’s “regular” crew, likely the one he trained with, was as follows:

Osborne, Joseph (NMI), Lieutenant, Pilot
Vogel, Carl G, Lieutenant, Co-Pilot
Karcich Jr., Mathew F, Lieutenant, Navigator
Archdeacon, John R, Lieutenant, Bombardier
Fama, Elmo (NMI), Sergeant, Radio Operator/Gunner
Jeffcoat, Harry A, Staff Sergeant, Engineer/Top Turret Gunner
Dilworth, William L, Sergeant, Ball Turret Gunner
Waite Jr., John (NMI), Sergeant, Right Waist Gunner
Desouchet Jr., William O, Sergeant, Left Waist Gunner
Nelson, William F, Sergeant, Tail Gunner

This response will be posted in the "Looking 4" section of our website, in case any members or readers have any additional information. The crew photo you sent is one we have that came from the National Archives, and its caption states that it was taken on 1 May 1944. We have no record that indicates Lt. Archdeacon flew with the 379th on the Schweinfurt mission on 17 August 1943, but it is possible he was with another group at that time.

Subject: B17 Blues in the Night

My wifes grandfather served as a waist gunner on both Stump Jumper as his regular plane and Blues in the Night as his alternate. He was shot down in Blues in the Night and made a POW.

We have been looking for picts of the plane he went down in but have been unsucessful up to now. Can you help? Any and all Picts of him and his planes would fill in the gaps in his history. His name was Wayne Davis.

He sadly passed on last year. Interestingly, though, when he was fading away he kept saying that he had to go fly and claimed that there was someone standing at the foot of his bed in a "brown uniform". He died on D-Day 2010. The last thing he heard before he went was a B17 from the airport close by flying overhead. It was there giving its annual airplane rides.

He was the last member of his crew.

Thank you for your help.
Jeff Johnson

Jeff –
Our condolences on the passing of Sgt. Davis. With the family’s permission, we will add his name to our Taps roster.

On May 19, 1944, the 379th attacked an aircraft component plant at Berlin, Germany. Sgt. Davis was part of a crew flying in a/c 42-39783, “Blues in the Night”, which was abandoned by the crew after receiving severe flak damage near the target. Crew, and their fates, was as follows:
