1193. She would like to know general history and

of which she is aware he participated is
Schweinfurt on 17 August, 1943. I have attached

was shot down over England and was a POW and

missions as tail gunner with the 524th Squadron
from July 29 to September 28, 1944. Our records
show missions 176, 177, 178, 182, 184, 185, 186,
188, 189, 192, 204, 208, and 211. Sgt. Maniaci
may have flown additional missions, but these
are the ones we show in our records.
On
September 28, 1944, the 379th targeted an
ordnance plant at Magdeburg, Germany. Sgt.
Maniaci was flying in a/c 42-38183, “The Lost
Angel”, which was believed to have caught fire
over the target. Sgt Maniaci bailed out of the
a/c, the remaining crew members were able to
extinguish the fire and return to base. Crew was

run- bomb doors were opened at the Belgium
Coast." ..........this crew flew the Hun runner
on several missions between November 1944 to
January 1945. The last entry in the diary
regarding the Hun Runner in that this crew flew
was on January 13, 1945 and then the entries
switch to a new plane number for the following
missions thru March 1945.

Apparently two airmen survived the crash in
which Turell died . . . . are either one with

the 527th Squadron from December 4 to December

Sgt. Benson may have flown additional missions,

On December 9, 1944, the 379th targeted the
marshalling yards at Stuttgart, Germany. Sgt.
Benson was part of a crew flying in a/c
42-97170, “Julie Mae”, which collided with a/c
42-97833, “Silver Dollar”. Two of the crewmen in
“Silver Dollar” bailed out of their aircraft,
which subsequently was able to land safely in

My wifes grandfather served as
a waist gunner on both Stump Jumper as his
regular plane and Blues in the Night as his
alternate. He was shot down in Blues in the
Night and made a POW.
We have been
looking for picts of the plane he went down in
but have been unsucessful up to now. Can you
help? Any and all Picts of him and his planes
would fill in the gaps in his history. His name
was Wayne Davis.
He sadly passed on last
year. Interestingly, though, when he was fading
away he kept saying that he had to go fly and
claimed that there was someone standing at the
foot of his bed in a "brown uniform". He died on
D-Day 2010. The last thing he heard before he
went was a B17 from the airport close by flying
overhead. It was there giving its annual
airplane rides.
He was the last member of
his crew.

the 379th bomb group that was shot down on
February 22, 1944. He is currently alive and
well after surviving a stint in a POW camp. He
is a dear friend of mine and I am trying to find
