Subject: Herbert L. Odean Jr.

Hello...I am looking for any information on Herbert L. Odean Jr. He was a SSgt. and a tail gunner who completed 30 missions. All missions were flown from Mar. 3, to June 6, 1944. I would be especially interested in the crew makeup, plane serial no., nose art, training, etc. Thanks in advance. ---Dave Odean

Dave –
Association records for Herbert L. Odean show he flew 30 missions as gunner with the 525th Squadron from March 3 to June 8, 1944. Our records show missions 80, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 108, 111, 112, 114, 117, 119, 120, 125, 129, 132, 134, 135, 137, and 139. Sgt. Odean may have flown additional missions, but these are the ones we show in our records.

What looks to be Sgt. Odean’s “regular” crew, possibly the one he trained with, was as follows:

Sherwood, Paul T, 2nd Lieutenant, Pilot
Dunn, Edward J, 2nd Lieutenant, Co-Pilot
Lyles, Robert L, 2nd Lieutenant, Navigator
Kane, Stanley N, Flight Officer, Bombardier
Piatkowski, Chester J, Sergeant, Radio Operator/Gunner
Zeman Jr., Frank J, Sergeant, Engineer/Top Turret Gunner
Cooper, Joseph J, Sergeant, Ball Turret Gunner
O'Connor, Donald A, Sergeant, Right Waist Gunner
Anders, Paul M, Sergeant, Left Waist Gunner
Odean, Herbert L, Sergeant, Tail Gunner

This response will be posted in the "Looking 4" section of our website, in case any members or readers have any additional information. Sgt. Odean flew most of his missions (23 of 30, which was fairly unusual) in a single aircraft, s/n 42-31592, “Nobody’s Baby”. Sorry, but we have no image of this aircraft or crew. If you have any photos of Sgt. Odean or his crew, we would be interested in any copies you’d be willing to share.

Subject: Looking for information on my Grandfather

To whom this may concern:
I was hoping you may have some information and pictures that show my grandfather Norman E. Wolpert. From previous posts I saw he was in the 379th Bomber group and that he was a flight officer on a/c 44-6507 'Lucky Patch". I would be interested in any information, pictures, or stories involving his career.
Regards
Michael Krauss

Michael –
Association records for Norman E. Wolpert show he flew 3 missions as co-pilot with the 527th Squadron from April 16 to April 25, 1945. Our records show missions 326, 328, and 330. F/O Wolpert may have flown additional missions, but these are the ones we show in our records.

At this late point in the war, as combat operations were coming to a close (Mission 330 was the last combat mission flown by the 379th Bomb Group), many incoming replacement crews were split up to complete crews that were trying to complete as many missions as possible, and earn enough “points” to be sent home. Accordingly, F/O Wolpert flew with 2 different crews, 1 mission with the first, and 2 with the second. That last mission was flown in a/c 44-6507, “Lucky Patch”. Crew was as follows:

Renfrow, Raymond T, Flight Officer, Pilot
Wolpert, Norman E, Flight Officer, Co-Pilot
Thaxton Jr., Robert S, Flight Officer, Navigator
Sistek, Paul S, 2nd Lieutenant, Bombardier
Kurschner, John L, Sergeant, Radio Operator/Gunner
Crim, Robert C, Sergeant, Engineer/Top Turret Gunner
Loughridge, William J, Corporal, Ball Turret Gunner
Smith, David D, Corporal, Tail Gunner

This response will be posted in the "Looking 4" section of our website, in case any members or readers have any additional information. A photo of a/c 44-6507 “Lucky Patch”, dated 10 April 1945 (crewmen pictured unknown), is being sent separately. If you have any photos of F/O Wolpert or his crew, we would be interested in any copies you’d be willing to share.

Subject: Information about a WWII member

I am with the Houston Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. We have a small WWII museum in our hangar along with 5 flyable WWII aircraft. I am trying to improve one of our museum exibits, which is a tablecloth that belonged to a Red Cross Volunteer (Virginia Rado) during her two years of overseas service in WWII. She arrived in England in December of 44 and was assigned to the 56th Fighter Group then in April of 45 she was assigned to the 357th Fighter Group. In December of 44 she was assigned to the 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalion and was with them during the "Battle of the Bulge" and until the end of the war. She then ran a Red Cross Club in Germany for occupation troops until she returned home in late November 45.

Virginia carried a tablecloth with her during her ETO service and had it signed by people during dinners and parties put on by the Red Cross. This tablecloth has over 60 signatures on it and I am in the process of trying to identify as many of them as possible. (Some are blurred and illegible but we have been able to identify most of them, including signatures of 9 Ace's from the two fighter groups she was with in England.

We have one signature from a member of the 379th Bomb Group. G.A. Long signed the tablecloth as a member of the 379th and I am trying to find out some information about him. He would have signed it sometime during 1944 while she was stationed in England and it is possible he was a staff officer with the group.

Is it possible to find out if there was a G. A. Long with the 379th and if so any information about him that I can use in our display. (full name, rank, photo, aircraft information, etc.) I have attached a copy of his signature on this tablecloth.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Sam Hoynes
Commemorative Air Force

Sam –
Association records for George A. Long show he flew 35 missions as pilot with the 525th Squadron from August 3 to November 23, 1944. Lt. Long may have flown additional missions, but these are the ones we show in our records.

A photo identified as Lt. Long’s crew, dated 27 July 1944, is attached. Crew has been identified as follows:

Front Row, L to R: George A. Long; Virgil K. Grotsky; James V. Webb; John A. Kirkham III
Back Row, L to R: John D. Ray; Amergo J. (Al) Baldazzi; Karl R. Helmreich; Russell C. Johnson; Melvin Spencer; David N. Rust III

I was hoping to find more information about Benjamin Radensky.

Michael –
Association records for Benjamin Radensky show he flew 16 missions as radio operator/gunner with the 525th Squadron from May 29 to August 17, 1943. A photo of “Peter Wabbit” and crew, identified only as “A crew of the 379th…”, and dated 24 July 1943, is being sent separately. If you can identify Sgt. Radensky in this photo, or have any information on the identifications of the other men pictured, we would be grateful for that information. If you have any other photos of Sgt. Radensky or his crew, we would be interested in any copies you’d be willing to share.

The aircraft was hit by flak over the target, and was headed for a crash into the town of Pontpoint, France. After giving the crew orders to bail out, the pilot stayed with the plane and managed to prevent it from crashing into the village. A memorial was erected in the village and a street named in his honor. The person on whose land “Ensign Mary” crashed established a shrine where he found one of its propellers. This story is told in detail in the 379th’s Anthology, available from the PX. Crew was as follows:

Hello~
I am thrilled to have found your site! I have always known that my grandfather (who passed away when I was little) had flown a B17, but not much more info than that. My dad always referred to his plane as Topper, so anytime I searched I didn't come up with much. My aunt just pointed out its other name of Ol' Gappy, and now I'm on a roll! I would love to know more about what Grandpa did, so any information or photos you can share with me would be amazing! His name was Thomas Edward Lilley and he was the radioman.
Also, would you kindly add him to your taps list?
Thank you so much in advance! Have a wonderful day~ liz

Elizabeth Mundell

Liz –
