Subject: Harold R Wiley (Question about 379th
526 squadron)
Dear 379th Officers,
My name is Garrett
Nekic and I am currently a ninth grader at
Stonebridge HS in Ashburn, Va. I am doing
research on my Great Uncle'sservice in the Air
Force for a history project. His name was Harold
Wiley. He went by Dutch. From my research, he
was drafted in 1942 and was a tail gunner in
B17's. He was part of the 526th Squadron. He was
based in Yuma, Arizona and then went to England.
He was honarably discharged at the end of WWII.
I would love to learn more about the places he
toured and if you have any general information
about him and his crew. My Aunt thinks that
there were 6 people in his crew. Any information
you can share, including pictures would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time
and help! Garrett Nekic
9th Grader at Stonebridge HS
Garrett - Thanks for your inquiry. While we
don't have any information on Sgt Wiley's
training, or any places he may have been other
than Yuma, Arizona (which was an Army Air Force
Training Center) and Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire,
England (Station 117, 379th Bombardment Group -
Heavy), I am happy to be able to provide the
following:
Association records for Harold
R Wiley show he flew 34 missions as tail gunner
with the 526th Squadron from June 6 to August
26, 1944. Our records show mission numbers 137,
139, 140, 141, 143, 145, 146, 148, 150, 155,
156, 158, 159, 160, 162, 163, 164, 165, 166,
171, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, 179, 180,
182, 183, 187, 189, 190, and 194. Sgt Wiley may
have flown additional missions, but these are
the ones we have in our records.
At the
time of Sgt Wiley's training, crews consisted of
10 men - pilot, co-pilot, navigator, bombardier,
engineer/top turret gunner, radio
operator/gunner, LH waist gunner, RH waist
gunner, ball turret gunner, and tail gunner.
Such was likely the crew complement Sgt Wiley
was part of at his arrival at Kimbolton.
However, operational experience caused a change
right about the time Sgt Wiley was preparing for
his first combat mission - one of the two waist
gunners was dropped, and those two guns were
manned by a single waist gunner. That often left
incoming crews with one too many men, those
extra gunners being re-assigned. Accordingly,
Sgt Wiley began his combat experience with the
following crew:
Matoshko, Edward T,
Lieutenant, Pilot Mcelwain, James J,
Lieutenant, Co-Pilot Jones, John L,
Lieutenant, Navigator Ranftle, Alexander H,
Lieutenant, Bombardier Hightower, Bill H,
Staff Sergeant, Radio Operator/Gunner
Pawlowski, Dale G, Staff Sergeant, Engineer/Top
Turret Gunner Nash, Lloyd D, Sergeant, Ball
Turret Gunner Kalune, Fred G, Sergeant, Waist
Gunner Wiley, Harold R, Sergeant, Tail Gunner
Sorry, we have no photograph of Sgt Wiley or
the listed crew - if you have, or are aware of a
photo of him or his crew, we would be grateful
for a copy to add to our archives. Photos of two
aircraft in which Sgt Wiley flew multiple
missions - a/c 42-102689, "Lady Luck" (missions
171-182 and 190), and 42-97825, "Phyllis"
(missions 162-166), and a mission list of the
379th, which provides target names for the
missions listed in this response, are being sent
by separate e-mail.

posted in the "Looking 4" section of our
website, in case any members or readers have any
additional information.

His plane was shot down over Germany March 25th,
1945 and he was listed as missing in action. I
am reading Shades of Kimbolton, and am enjoying
the history of the group. I am sharing any
information I can find with my mother, Midred
Brahm Swartz, Roy's last surviving sibling. She
was especially pleased to see his name on the
Tablets of the Missing at the cemetery in
Cambridge. If anyone knows what bombers he may
have served on, that would be very helpful.
Thanks for your good work. Gary Swartz

According to records
we have, Lt Downs flew his first 5 missions as
Flight Officer Downs, thereafter as 2nd Lt Downs
– promotion to 1st Lt may have been after
completing his combat tour. Also, his first 4
missions were flown as part of the following
crew:

Following mission 59, the
Davis crew, minus F/O Downs, went MIA on January
30, 1944. The entire crew were taken POW. We
have no information regarding F/O Downs status –
an injury or illness may have resulted in the
Davis crew needing another co-pilot. In any
event, Lt Downs became a regular with the
following crew:

Lead and Deputy Lead crews, and at least one
mission in the tail gunner position, in the role
of formation control.

Sorry, we have no known photo of either
aircraft, or this crew. These early missions are
a challenge with respect to available photos or
documentation. It appears that after the
injuries suffered by the crew members on mission
2, and different recovery rates, the crew was
essentially “broken up”, and went where there
was a need. Sgt Allen did not fly with the same
crew as mission 2 again.

This response will be posted in the "Looking
4" section of our website, in case any members
or readers have any additional information. A

this photo was taken with an earlier crew on 12
June 1944, so it is unlikely your father is one
